The Bokonbaevo village serves as a picturesque gateway to the world of unspoiled nature and authentic nomadic culture on the southern shore of the high-altitude Lake Issyk-Kul. Situated at an elevation of about 1,800 meters above sea level, this location annually attracts international travelers seeking a genuine connection with nature and an introduction to ancient Kyrgyz traditions.
The history of this settlement, originally called Koltsovka and founded in 1912, is closely tied to the country’s cultural heritage. In 1944, the village was renamed Bokonbaevo in honor of the prominent Kyrgyz poet and playwright Zhoomart Bokonbaev, whose tragic fate is immortalized in the name of this place.
Today, Bokonbaevo is the ideal starting point for exploring the majestic Terskey-Ala-Too mountain range. Unforgettable trekking routes begin here, leading into wild, untouched gorges where you can see high-mountain pastures (jailoo) and hidden waterfalls. Not far from here is the unique salt lake Tuz-Köl, known for its therapeutic properties. The beaches of the southern shore in the Bokonbaevo area are famous for their spaciousness and clean, cool water, offering a peaceful retreat away from the crowds.
The village is recognized as a center for the preservation of nomadic traditions, and tourists here do not just observe, but actively participate in the cultural life. The main event, which attracts guests from all over the world, is the annual Salbuurun Festival of Falconry. It is a spectacular event showcasing traditional hunting with golden eagles (berkuts) and falcons, as well as ancient equestrian games. Furthermore, the village actively organizes masterclasses that allow for deep immersion into the local culture: you can learn how to make traditional felt carpets (shyrdaks), participate in cooking lessons for national dishes, or go on a horse ride with experienced berkutchis (eagle hunters).
Bokonbaevo offers guests not only a vacation amidst nature but also an authentic, interactive experience of Kyrgyz nomadic life.
