Kegety Gorge
Kegety Gorge is one of the most accessible and picturesque locations in the mountains of Kyrgyzstan, situated just an hour and a half drive from Bishkek. Here you will find routes for any fitness level: from an easy walk to a waterfall to challenging high-altitude trekking to a turquoise lake.
Kegety Waterfall
The calling card of the Kegety Gorge is the waterfall itself, cascading from a height of about 25 meters. Its main feature is its incredible accessibility: it is located just a hundred meters from the main road.
- Accessibility: Visiting the waterfall does not require special equipment or serious physical training. Ordinary sneakers are sufficient.
- Winter Tourism: In winter, the waterfall transforms into a stunning turquoise ice pillar, attracting ice climbing enthusiasts and winter tourists.
Trekking to Kol-Tor Lake: A High-Altitude Challenge
For those seeking more serious challenges, the gorge offers an ascent to Kol-Tor Lake.

The Lake and the Rout
Kol-Tor Lake is situated at an altitude of 2,725 meters above sea level. It is believed that the lake was formed as a result of an ancient earthquake. The route to the lake is approximately 7–8 kilometers one way, and the ascent usually takes 3–4 hours.
Uniqueness and Nature
The main reward for the climb is the incredible color of the water, which changes shades from turquoise to emerald depending on the lighting. However, be aware that the water temperature here does not exceed +5°C, and only the most hardened dare to swim. On the way to the lake, in a left tributary of the river, you may also discover the hidden Small Waterfall (15 m), often overlooked. Unique Tian Shan spruces grow particularly densely here.
3. Logistics and Useful Information for Travelers
How to Get There from Bishkek
Kegety Gorge is conveniently located: the drive from Bishkek takes only 1.5–2 hours by car. However, due to irregular public transport, we highly recommend using an organized tour or transfer to guarantee comfort and safety.
Gorge Secrets and Preparation
- Name and Flora: The name “Kegety” (from the Turkic word for “kid”) hints at the mountain goats that once inhabited the area. The gorge is also known as a “natural pharmacy” due to the abundance of medicinal herbs, and archaeologists have even found traces of ancient ore mining here.
- Packing: Sneakers are suitable for the waterfall, but hiking boots are necessary for the trekking to Kol-Tor Lake. Do not forget warm clothing and a raincoat due to changeable weather, as well as a supply of water, food, and sun protection.
Book your day tour to Kegety to see Kyrgyzstan’s most accessible waterfall and conquer the turquoise Kol-Tor!
