Konorchek Canyons: Exploring the “Mars of Central Asia”
Imagine stepping onto the surface of Mars without leaving Earth. Red cliffs, whimsical clay castles, and the ringing silence of deep chasms. Welcome to Konorchek—often referred to as the “Grand Canyon of Central Asia.”
The Magic of Konorchek The Konorchek Canyons (also known as Suluu-Terek) cover an area of 200 km² in the eastern part of the Kyrgyz Range, hidden within the Boom Gorge.
3 Facts to Impress Any Traveler:
- Extinct Volcano: Home to the remains of the Segizkan-Shokny volcano, dating back 2.5–3 million years. You can still find fragments of ancient lava and fossilized shells.
- Anomalous Climate: It almost never rains here. Summers are scorching (up to 40°C), while winters are surprisingly snow-free.
- Ancient Seabed: Millions of years ago, this was the bottom of an ancient sea. The white clay layers among the red rocks are salt deposits from that era.
The Route: Entering the “Aeolian Castles”
The journey to the canyons is an adventure in itself. The main trail starts at the Red Bridge in Boom Gorge (approx. 125 km from Bishkek).
- The Hike: About 4–5 km one way (1.5–2 hours).
- Difficulty: Moderate. You will hike through a dry riverbed, navigating narrow passages only 1.5 meters wide.
- Obstacles: You will encounter several “dry waterfalls”—rock ledges 2–3 meters high that require a bit of scrambling.

Expert Recommendations
As a pro, I advise against visiting in the peak of summer (July-August) due to the heat.
- Best Time: April – May or September – October. In spring, the valley blooms with rare flora, and temperatures are perfect for trekking.
- Winter: A great option for those seeking Martian landscapes without the crowds.
Essential Travel Tips
- Water is Priority: There are no water sources in the canyons. Carry at least 2 liters per person.
- Footwear: Sturdy trekking shoes or sneakers with good grip are mandatory for the gravel and sand.
- Sun Protection: The sun reflects off the red rocks. Wear a hat, long sleeves, and SPF 50+.
- Transport: Park your car at the cafes near the Red Bridge. If taking a bus from Bishkek toward Issyk-Kul, ask the driver to drop you at “Krasny Most” (Red Bridge).
