Murdash Gorge: The Emerald Treasure of the Alay Mountains
Introduction
If you are searching for a place where the city’s noise is replaced by the roar of waterfalls and the air is infused with the scent of ancient juniper, Murdash Gorge is your ideal destination. Located just 75–80 kilometers from the city of Osh (approximately a 2-hour drive), this gorge serves as a gateway to the rugged and magnificent nature of the Alay Range. Elevations here range from 1,800 to 2,500 meters above sea level, ensuring a refreshing climate even during the peak of summer.
Why Visit Murdash?
Murdash is an ideal location for an eco-tour from Osh.
- The Rock “Gates”: At the entrance to the gorge, the mountains seem to part, forming natural passages made of conglomerate rock. Geologists note that these cliffs consist of compressed pebbles and sand, creating a unique “bubbly” texture.
- Ethno-Immersion: Opportunity to stay in a guesthouse in Murdash village and taste authentic Alay cuisine.

Things to Do
Nomadic Life (Ethno-Tourism): During the summer months (June to August), the yurts of local shepherds dot the slopes. Here, you can taste authentic Alay kurut (dried yogurt balls), fresh kaimak (clotted cream), and bread baked in a traditional kazan.
Eco-Walks and Hiking: For those who prefer a relaxed pace, light walks along the river to the base of the waterfalls are perfect. These routes do not require special training and are suitable for families with children.
Photo Tours: Murdash is a paradise for landscape photographers. The contrast of vibrant green slopes, gray cliffs, and the white foam of the waterfalls creates stunning shots.
Horseback Riding: In the village of Murdash, located at the mouth of the gorge, you can rent horses. Local guides can lead you along trails that are inaccessible to vehicles.
Important Travel Tips
- Seasonality: The best time to visit is from May to October. In May and June, the gorge is at its greenest and the waterfalls are at their peak. In September and October, the mountains turn brilliant shades of gold.
- Transport: After passing Murdash village, the road into the gorge becomes unpaved and rocky. We strongly recommend using 4WD (four-wheel drive) vehicles.
- Gear: Even in summer, bring a light jacket or windbreaker—due to the proximity of glaciers and the mist from the waterfalls, it can get chilly. Sturdy footwear with non-slip soles is essential.
Logistics: How to Get There?
The route from Osh passes through the town of Gulcha along the Pamir Highway and then veers into the Alay Mountains. We organize one-day jeep tours that include transfers, guide services, and a picnic by the river.
