3‑Day Chong‑Kemin Winter Tour: Culture, Horseback Riding

Ala Archa gorge

A magical 3‑day winter adventure in Kyrgyzstan, where ancient history, breathtaking landscapes, and authentic experiences come together. Perfect for New Year holidays, this tour offers a unique blend of adventure and cultural immersion.

Start in the picturesque Chong‑Kemin Valley, where you’ll enjoy horseback rides through snow‑dusted meadows and majestic mountain vistas. Experience Kyrgyz nomadic traditions firsthand as you explore this tranquil winter landscape on horseback.

Next, visit the iconic Burana Tower —an 11th‑century Silk Road monument and UNESCO‑linked site. Explore the archaeological area with ancient balbals (stone grave markers) and ruins of Balasagun, connecting with Kyrgyzstan’s rich past.

Throughout the journey, the Tien Shan mountains provide a stunning backdrop — their snow‑capped peaks and frozen waterfalls creating a true winter wonderland. You’ll travel through dramatic gorges and pause at scenic viewpoints, soaking in the serenity of Kyrgyzstan’s winter beauty.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival & Ala‑Archa

feeding of squirrelы in Ala Archa

We’ll meet you at Manas Airport with a warm «Welcome to Kyrgyzstan!» and head straight to Bishkek. After a quick hotel check‑in, we’ll fuel up with a hearty lunch at a local spot — try lagman (noodle stew) or shorpo (meat soup) while your guide shares fun facts about Kyrgyz cuisine.

Then, we go to Ala‑Archa National Park! Just 40 minutes from the city, you’ll step into a winter wonderland: snow‑covered fir trees, crisp mountain air, and panoramic views of the Tian Shan. We’ll take an easy 2–3 km walk (no rush — plenty of time for photos!).

Back in Bishkek by evening, you’ll unwind at the hotel. Dinner tonigt? A Kyrgyz classic: beshbarmak (tender boiled meat with noodles) or manty (steamed dumplings). Over dinner, your guide will chat about tomorrow’s adventures —Burana Tower and horseback riding in Chong‑Kemin!

Included: Hotel, entrance fee to National Park Ala Archa

Day 2: Burana Tower & Chong‑Kemin Valley

Burana Tower

Morning starts with breakfast and a scenic 1.5‑hour drive east towards  Burana Tower.  But  first we’ll wind through Kegety Gorge, where we can have a walk to the ised Watefall and streched up.

Next, This 11th‑century minaret once stood 45 meters tall — now it’s 25 m after an earthquake, but still majestic. You’ll wander among ancient balbals (stone figures) and imagine life in Balasagun, a Silk Road metropolis. Your guide will share tales of traders and nomads —trust us, history comes alive here. Then we will have our lunch at the town Tokmok.

By afternoon, we’ll arrive in Chong‑Kemin Valley — a peaceful world of snow.

Your home for the night is a family‑run guesthouse, where the hosts will greet you with steaming tea. Then, saddle up! Even if you’ve never ridden before, our guide will show you the basics. Imagine trottig through snow‑dusted meadows, mountains rising in the distance. It’s pure magic.

Dinner tonight is a feast: osh (rice pilaf) or kuyrdak (meat stew), all made with love by the guesthouse family.

Included: night in the guesthouse, horse riding, entrance fee to burana tower, dinner.

Day 3: Nomadic Life & Departure

Wake up to the smell of fried bread drizzled with honey — your breakfast at the guesthouse is a sweet start to the day. After eating, we’ll head to the Kok‑Moynok Canyons — a hidden gem where nature’s artistry comes alive.

Kok‑Moynok: A Palette of Stone

Just a short drive from Chong‑Kemin, these canyons reveal a landscape shaped over millions of years. The rock layers — in shades of red, orange, and ochre — tell an ancient story of tectonic shifts and rushing rivers. High iron content in the soil gives the cliffs their striking colours, making every turn a living painting.

You’ll see:

  • Arches and spires sculpted by wind and water.

  • Fossil traces of marine life — remnants of a prehistoric sea.

  • Wildlife glimpses — eagles soaring overhead, hardy plants clinging to rocky slopes.

Time to Explore

We’ll begin a gentle 1-2 km walk (easy to moderate). Your guide will point out:

  • the most photogenic spots;

  • narrow canyon passages where your voice echoes;

  • quiet nooks perfect for a moment of stillness.

Feel free to:

  • snap photos of the vibrant rock formations;

  • touch the ancient stones (gently — they’ve seen millennia!);

  • listen to the wind singing through the cliffs.

After about 2 hours, we’ll lunch at the road cafe.

Back to Bishkek

By mid‑afternoon, we’ll start the drive to Bishkek. We’ll pass through snowy Tian Shan foothills, now familiar yet still breathtaking.

By late afternoon, we’ll drop you off at your hotel or Manas Airport. As we say goodbye, you’ll carry more than memories: the crunch of snow, the rhythm of horse hooves, and the echoes of the Silk Road.

Included: Accomodation, Breakfast
