7-Day Kyrgyzstan 4×4 Adventure

Welcome to Kyrgyzstan!

After meeting your guide in Bishkek, we begin our journey with a visit to Ala-Archa National Park, located approximately 40 km south of the capital.

The road quickly takes us from the city into the mountains of the Kyrgyz Ala-Too range. Depending on the weather and the group's interests, we take an easy walk through the gorge, following the river and enjoying views of the surrounding peaks.

There is no demanding trekking today — the goal is to enjoy the mountains and have an easy introduction to Kyrgyzstan before the more adventurous days ahead.

After returning to Bishkek, we visit Osh Bazaar, one of the city's most colorful markets and a great introduction to everyday local life.

In the evening, we check into our hotel and prepare for tomorrow's journey into the mountains.

After breakfast, we leave Bishkek and begin our 4×4 journey into the interior of Kyrgyzstan.

The road climbs toward Too-Ashuu Pass, crossing the Kyrgyz Ala-Too mountains before opening onto the vast Suusamyr Valley — one of the country's largest high-altitude valleys.

We stop along the way for panoramic views and photographs before continuing through the mountain landscape toward Kyzyl-Oy.

The scenery gradually changes as we follow the Kokomeren River through dramatic valleys and rocky mountain formations.

By afternoon, we reach the small village of Kyzyl-Oy, where we stay in a family-run guest house.

Away from the main tourist routes, this is our first opportunity to experience the slower rhythm of rural Kyrgyzstan and the hospitality of a local family.

After breakfast, we leave Kyzyl-Oy and continue deeper into the mountains toward Son-Kul.

Today's route takes us through remote valleys and across the Kara-Keche mountain road, gradually climbing into the highlands of central Kyrgyzstan.

As we approach Son-Kul, the landscape opens into an enormous alpine plateau surrounded by mountains. Located at 3,016 m above sea level, the lake is one of the most important summer pasture areas for Kyrgyz nomadic families.

During the warmer months, shepherds bring their horses, sheep and cattle to the jailoo — the traditional high-altitude summer pastures surrounding the lake.

After arriving at our yurt camp, we have time to explore the lakeshore on foot, meet local families and enjoy the wide-open landscape.

Tonight we experience one of Kyrgyzstan's essential traditions — sleeping in a felt yurt beside Son-Kul.

After breakfast at Son-Kul, we leave the high-altitude plateau and descend via the famous 33 Parrots Pass, one of Kyrgyzstan's most photogenic mountain roads.

The winding road offers spectacular views as we descend toward the Naryn region.

We continue to Naryn, the main town of central Kyrgyzstan, where we stop for lunch and make final preparations before heading into the remote border region.

From Naryn, the journey becomes increasingly wild and isolated. We travel south through the Ak-Say Valley toward Kok-Kiya, close to the Chinese border.

The wide-open landscapes, distant mountain ranges and almost complete absence of settlements give this part of the journey a true expedition atmosphere.

By evening, we reach our accommodation in Kok-Kiya, where we have dinner and prepare for tomorrow's horseback journey to Kel-Suu.

Today we reach one of the main highlights of our seven-day adventure — remote Kel-Suu Lake.

After breakfast, we set out on horseback through the Kok-Kiya Valley. Accompanied by local horsemen, we follow the trail across a vast high-altitude landscape toward the lake.

No previous horse-riding experience is required. The pace is relaxed, allowing us to enjoy the surrounding mountains along the way.

Kel-Suu lies at approximately 3,500 m above sea level, hidden between steep rocky cliffs close to the Chinese border. We spend time at the lake walking along the shore, taking photographs and enjoying one of Kyrgyzstan's most isolated mountain landscapes.

Depending on the season, water level and weather conditions, an optional boat trip may be available.

We then ride back through the valley to Kok-Kiya and return to our guest house, where we stop for a hot lunch.

After lunch, we leave the remote border region and drive back to Naryn.

By evening, we check into our hotel and enjoy a comfortable night after two days in the high mountains.

After breakfast, we leave Naryn and begin our journey toward Issyk-Kul.

Today's drive takes us out of the high mountain landscapes of central Kyrgyzstan and toward the much warmer southern shore of the lake.

Along the way, we stop for lunch and enjoy the changing scenery as the mountains gradually open toward Issyk-Kul.

In the afternoon, we meet a traditional Kyrgyz eagle hunter, or berkutchi.

During a private demonstration, we learn about the centuries-old nomadic tradition of training golden eagles, the relationship between the hunter and the bird, and how this remarkable tradition has been passed from one generation to another.

After the demonstration, we continue to Bokonbaevo and check into our family-run guest house.

The remainder of the evening is deliberately relaxed, giving us time to rest before tomorrow's final journey through Skazka, Barskoon and the high Arabel Plateau.

Our final day is one of the most scenic and diverse days of the journey.

After breakfast, we leave Bokonbaevo and continue along the southern shore of Issyk-Kul to Skazka, or “Fairy Tale” Canyon. Here, wind and erosion have created a maze of red, orange and yellow sandstone formations overlooking the blue waters of the lake.

We take an easy walk through the canyon before continuing east toward Barskoon Gorge.

From Barskoon, our 4×4 journey takes us high into the Tien Shan toward the Arabel Plateau. As we climb, the landscape changes dramatically — forests and mountain rivers gradually give way to a vast high-altitude world surrounded by glaciers and peaks.

At approximately 3,800–4,000 meters above sea level, Arabel is one of the highest points of our journey and offers a completely different perspective on the mountains of Kyrgyzstan.

On our way back through Barskoon Gorge, we make a stop for a short walk and views of its mountain waterfalls.

We then return to the southern shore of Issyk-Kul and begin our journey back to Bishkek.

Arrival in the capital is expected in the evening, marking the end of our seven-day adventure across Kyrgyzstan.
