WHY TRAVELERS CHOOSE THIS TOUR

Explore Kyrgyzstan Beyond the Classic Routes

This expedition reaches Jyrgalan, Enilchek and Sary-Jaz — a very different experience from the better-known Son-Kul and Issyk-Kul circuits.

Experience the Eastern Tien Shan by 4×4

Remote mountain roads, high passes and isolated valleys are an essential part of the journey rather than simply transportation between attractions.

Combine Adventure Without Technical Trekking

Horseback riding, short walks, remote 4×4 travel and mountain exploration create an active itinerary without requiring technical climbing or multi-day trekking.

See Remarkably Different Landscapes

Green valleys, high mountain passes, Sary-Jaz, Arabel Plateau, Issyk-Kul and colorful sandstone canyons create strong contrasts within a single journey.

Balance Remote Adventure with Local Culture

The expedition combines isolated mountain regions with Dungan cuisine, eagle hunting traditions, village life and the markets and landmarks of Bishkek.

Travel Privately

The private format allows us to adjust the pace and maintain the flexibility that is particularly important when traveling through remote mountain regions.

IS THIS TOUR FOR YOU?

This Tour Is a Great Choice If You:

  • Want to explore a less-traveled side of Kyrgyzstan
  • Enjoy remote mountain landscapes and scenic 4×4 journeys
  • Want a full horseback riding experience without doing a multi-day horse trek
  • Are interested in Enilchek and the Soviet history of the Eastern Tien Shan
  • Want to explore Sary-Jaz and Ak-Chunkur Cave
  • Enjoy combining nature, adventure and local culture
  • Are comfortable spending one night in very basic remote accommodation
  • Prefer a private or small-group journey
  • Are comfortable with several long driving days on mountain and unpaved roads
  • Understand that weather and road conditions may require some flexibility

This Tour May Not Be the Best Fit If You:

  • Expect comfortable hotel accommodation every night
  • Prefer short driving days and a relaxed resort-style holiday
  • Are uncomfortable with rough mountain roads or basic facilities
  • Want a fixed itinerary that cannot change because of weather or road conditions
  • Prefer a trekking-focused journey with long hikes every day

Expedition Mindset

The Eastern Tien Shan rewards travelers who are comfortable with a little unpredictability.

Road conditions, mountain weather and river levels can affect the remote sections of the route. Accommodation in Enilchek is simple, distances are significant, and some days are long.

In return, the journey reaches landscapes and communities that most visitors to Kyrgyzstan never experience.

Burana Tower

Your journey begins in Bishkek as we leave the capital and travel east through the Chuy Valley toward the mountains.

Our first stop is Burana Tower, part of the archaeological remains of medieval Balasagun. Explore the tower, ancient stone figures and the surrounding archaeological site before continuing into Chon-Kemin.

By afternoon, the open landscapes of the Chuy Valley give way to green mountains, forests and villages.

Arrive at our guest house, settle in and enjoy a relaxed first evening in the countryside.

Highlights: Burana Tower • Chuy Valley • Chon-Kemin
Accommodation: Guest House, Chon-Kemin
Meals: Lunch, Dinner

DAY 2 — CHON-KEMIN → GRIGORIEV & SEMENOV GORGES → KARAKOL

Gorge Grigorievskoe\ Ущелье Григорьевское

After breakfast, leave Chon-Kemin and continue east toward Issyk-Kul, one of the great mountain lakes of Central Asia.

Today we explore two of the best-known mountain valleys on the northern shore — Grigoriev Gorge and Semenov Gorge.

Drive into Grigoriev Gorge, where mountain streams, alpine meadows and Tien Shan spruce forests lead deeper into the Kungey Ala-Too mountains.

Continue through the mountain landscape toward Semenov Gorge, stopping along the way for short walks, photographs and panoramic views.

The route provides an excellent introduction to the changing landscapes of Issyk-Kul before we continue east toward Karakol.

After arriving in Karakol, explore the town's multicultural heritage, including the wooden Holy Trinity Orthodox Cathedral and the colorful Dungan Mosque.

In the evening, join a local Dungan family for dinner and discover a cuisine shaped by the history of the Dungan community in Kyrgyzstan.

Tomorrow we leave the classic Issyk-Kul route and head deeper into the Eastern Tien Shan.

Highlights: Issyk-Kul • Grigoriev Gorge • Semenov Gorge • Karakol • Dungan Mosque • Dungan Family Dinner
Accommodation: Hotel / Guest House, Karakol
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dungan Dinner

DAY 3 — KARAKOL → JYRGALAN | HORSEBACK RIDING IN THE MOUNTAINS

horse backriding Jyrgalan

Today is deliberately slower.

After breakfast, drive to Jyrgalan, a small mountain village surrounded by alpine meadows, forests and high ridges.

Meet our local horsemen and begin a full horseback experience through the landscapes surrounding the village.

Ride across open pastures and mountain trails, stopping along the way for photographs, lunch and time simply to enjoy the surroundings.

There is no need to rush today. Jyrgalan provides a relaxed transition between the cultural beginning of the journey and the remote expedition days ahead.

Return to the village in the afternoon and spend the evening at the guest house.

Highlights: Jyrgalan Valley • Horseback Riding • Alpine Landscapes • Mountain Village
Accommodation: Guest House, Jyrgalan
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 4: Alpine Bliss in Jyrgalan (Horse Riding)

Chon Ashu Pass

Today we enter the remote Eastern Tien Shan.

Leave Jyrgalan after breakfast and travel by 4×4 across increasingly isolated mountain terrain toward Chon-Ashuu Pass.

Beyond the pass, settlements become scarce and the landscapes become wider and more dramatic as we continue toward Enilchek.

Arrive in Enilchek, a remote settlement whose history is closely connected with Soviet-era mining in this part of Kyrgyzstan.

Explore the settlement on foot, seeing abandoned residential buildings, industrial remains and traces of everyday life from its more active period.

Later, continue to the local hot springs and relax in naturally heated water after the mountain journey.

Tonight we stay in Enilchek itself, allowing us to experience the region without rushing back toward Karakol.

Highlights: Chon-Ashuu Pass • Remote 4×4 Roads • Enilchek • Hot Springs
Accommodation: Basic Local Guest House, Enilchek
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 5 — ENILCHEK → SARY-JAZ VALLEY → AK-CHUNKUR CAVE → KARAKOL

Sary Jaz valley

After breakfast, leave Enilchek and set out to explore the Sary-Jaz Valley.

Today is another true expedition day, taking us through vast open landscapes surrounded by the high mountains of the Central Tien Shan.

Travel by 4×4 through the valley, stopping for photography and short walks as we explore this sparsely populated region.

One of today's main destinations is Ak-Chunkur Cave. Leave the vehicle and explore the cave and its surroundings on foot before continuing through Sary-Jaz.

Later in the day, begin the return journey across the mountains toward Karakol.

After several days in remote terrain, arrive at your hotel for a comfortable evening and well-earned rest.

Highlights: Sary-Jaz Valley • Ak-Chunkur Cave • Central Tien Shan • Remote 4×4 Travel
Accommodation: Hotel / Guest House, Karakol
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 6 — KARAKOL → JETI-OGUZ → BARSKOON → ARABEL PLATEAU → SKAZKA CANYON

Jety Oguz Rocks

After breakfast, leave Karakol and begin exploring the southern side of Issyk-Kul.

Our first stop is Jeti-Oguz Gorge, known for its distinctive red sandstone formations and mountain scenery.

Continue west toward Barskoon Gorge, where forests of Tien Shan spruce and mountain waterfalls create another dramatic change of landscape.

From Barskoon, road and weather conditions permitting, climb toward the high-altitude Arabel Plateau.

The landscape changes completely as forests give way to broad alpine terrain, mountain lakes and surrounding peaks.

After exploring Arabel, descend toward Issyk-Kul and continue to Skazka Canyon.

Walk through Skazka's colorful sandstone formations and eroded ridges, with views toward Issyk-Kul.

Tonight we stay at a local guest house near Skazka Canyon, avoiding unnecessary driving and allowing for a more relaxed end to a long but varied day.

Highlights: Jeti-Oguz • Barskoon Gorge • Waterfalls • Arabel Plateau • Skazka Canyon • Issyk-Kul
Accommodation: Guest House near Skazka Canyon
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 7 — BOKONBAEVO → EAGLE HUNTING → AK-SAY CANYONS → BISHKEK

Ak Say Canyons

After breakfast, continue west toward the Bokonbaevo area for one of the journey's main cultural experiences.

Meet a local berkutchi — traditional eagle hunter — and learn about the relationship between the hunter and the golden eagle, the training of the bird and the history of this tradition in Kyrgyz culture.

Continue toward the Ak-Say Canyons on the southern shore of Issyk-Kul.

Explore the dry, sculpted canyon landscape on foot and enjoy the striking contrast between its eroded formations, the blue waters of Issyk-Kul and the surrounding mountains.

After lunch, leave Issyk-Kul and begin the return journey to Bishkek.

Travel through Boom Gorge and the Chuy Valley before arriving in the capital in the evening.

Highlights: Eagle Hunting Tradition • Ak-Say Canyons • Issyk-Kul • Boom Gorge
Accommodation: Hotel, Bishkek
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

DAY 8 — BISHKEK CITY TOUR → OSH BAZAAR → AIRPORT TRANSFER

After breakfast, explore the center of Kyrgyzstan's capital and discover the city's combination of Soviet architecture, monuments, parks and modern urban life.

Visit some of Bishkek's main central landmarks and learn how the city developed from a small settlement into the political and cultural center of modern Kyrgyzstan.

Continue to Osh Bazaar, one of the city's busiest traditional markets.

Walk through its colorful stalls selling spices, dried fruits, fresh produce, traditional foods, clothing and everyday goods — a lively final glimpse of local life before departure.

Depending on your flight schedule, there will be time for lunch or free time in the city.

Skazka / South Shore of Issyk-Kul — Guest House | 1 Night

IMPORTANT TO KNOW

Accommodation standards vary significantly during this expedition.

Hotels in Karakol and Bishkek provide the highest level of comfort, while accommodation in remote mountain regions — especially Enilchek — is considerably simpler.

This contrast is part of traveling through areas where conventional tourist infrastructure is extremely limited.

Documents

Your original passport is essential.

Enilchek and Sary-Jaz are located within a controlled border region. You must carry the same passport that was used to prepare your border-zone permit.

Recommended

Bring a smaller overnight bag rather than a large suitcase if possible. Space in a 4×4 is limited, and smaller luggage is considerably easier to handle during the remote section of the expedition.

No technical trekking or climbing equipment is required.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How difficult is this tour?

The tour is rated Moderate.

There is no technical trekking or climbing, but travelers should be comfortable with mountain roads, several long driving days, horseback riding and short walks on uneven terrain.

Do I need horseback riding experience?

No. The Jyrgalan horseback experience can be adapted for beginners.

Local horsemen accompany the group, and the riding pace can be adjusted according to experience and confidence.

Do I need a border permit for Enilchek and Sary-Jaz?

Yes.

A border-zone permit is required, and Casting Travel arranges the standard permit in advance using your passport details.

You must carry your original passport during this section of the journey.

How comfortable is the accommodation in Enilchek?

Very basic.

Enilchek is a remote mountain settlement with extremely limited tourist infrastructure. Rooms and facilities are simple, and services such as hot water, electricity, Wi-Fi and mobile connection may be limited.

The other nights of the tour provide considerably more comfortable accommodation.

Is Sary-Jaz and Ak-Chunkur Cave guaranteed?

The Sary-Jaz section is highly dependent on mountain weather, river levels and road conditions.

Safety always comes first. If conditions make the planned route unsuitable, the driver-guide may adjust the route or replace part of the program with the best available alternative.

What is the best season for this expedition?

The main operating season is June to September.

Conditions in the Eastern Tien Shan can vary considerably from year to year, so early- and late-season departures require additional attention to mountain and road conditions.

Is this a private tour?

Yes. The expedition is designed primarily as a private tour for small groups.

This gives us much more flexibility in remote areas and allows the pace to be adjusted to the group.

Are there long driving days?

Yes.

This is a 4×4 expedition rather than a conventional sightseeing tour. Some days involve several hours on mountain and unpaved roads.

The driving itself is part of the experience, particularly in the Enilchek and Sary-Jaz region.

What happens if bad weather affects the route?

The itinerary may be adjusted.

Mountain weather, road conditions and river levels can change quickly. We maintain flexibility on the expedition section rather than promising access when conditions are unsafe.

Why is the tour eight days instead of seven?

The additional day allows us to explore the Eastern Tien Shan without turning Enilchek and Sary-Jaz into rushed day trips.

It also gives us time for a full horseback experience in Jyrgalan, a night in Enilchek, Ak-Chunkur Cave, the southern shore of Issyk-Kul and a final day in Bishkek.
