Itinerary

DAY 1 — BISHKEK → KOK-MOINOK CANYON → ORTO-TOKOY → KALMAK-ASHUU PASS → SON-KUL | INTO THE NOMADIC HIGHLANDS

We leave Bishkek in the morning and begin our journey east toward the mountains of central Kyrgyzstan.

Our first stop is Kok-Moinok Canyon, where we take a short walk among unusual clay formations shaped by wind and water.

We then continue toward Orto-Tokoy Reservoir before turning south and beginning our climb into the highlands.

The road gradually rises toward Kalmak-Ashuu Pass, one of the most scenic approaches to Son-Kul. As we cross the pass, the landscape opens dramatically, revealing the vast high-altitude basin surrounding the lake.

By afternoon, we arrive at Son-Kul, located at 3,016 m above sea level.

During summer, the surrounding jailoo pastures are home to nomadic and semi-nomadic families who bring their horses, sheep and cattle to graze in the highlands.

After arriving at our yurt camp, there is time to walk along the lakeshore, explore the surrounding pastures or simply enjoy the silence and scale of the landscape.

In the evening, we have a traditional dinner and spend the night in a felt yurt beneath the mountain sky.

Wake up surrounded by the open landscapes of Son-Kul and enjoy breakfast at the yurt camp.

The morning is deliberately unhurried, giving you time to experience the atmosphere of the lake before beginning the journey back to Bishkek.

Take a walk along the lakeshore, photograph the surrounding mountains and horses, or simply enjoy the peaceful high-altitude landscape.

For those who would like to explore farther, optional horseback riding with a local horseman can be arranged at an additional cost.

After lunch, we leave Son-Kul by a different route and descend through the famous 33 Parrots Pass.

The winding mountain road offers spectacular views as we leave the high-altitude basin and descend toward the Naryn region.

Along the way, we stop at a mountain waterfall before continuing through the valleys and mountains toward Bishkek.
