DAY 1 — BISHKEK → KEGETY GORGE → BURANA TOWER → CHON-KEMIN | FROM SILK ROAD HISTORY TO MOUNTAIN VALLEYS

Chon Kemin horse riding

Welcome to Kyrgyzstan!

After meeting your guide in Bishkek, we leave the capital and begin our five-day journey around Issyk-Kul.

Our first nature stop is Kegety Gorge, one of the scenic valleys of the Kyrgyz Ala-Too range. We take a short walk and visit the waterfall before continuing through the Chuy Valley.

Next, we visit Burana Tower, one of Kyrgyzstan's most important historical landmarks. The tower is a surviving minaret of the medieval city of Balasagun, once an important settlement along the Silk Road.

We explore the archaeological site, see the collection of ancient balbals — Turkic stone figures — and, if conditions allow, climb the tower for panoramic views of the surrounding valley.

After lunch, we continue toward Chon-Kemin National Park.

Upon arrival, we check into our family-run guest house before exploring the surrounding countryside on horseback.

The ride takes us through the peaceful landscapes of Chon-Kemin, surrounded by fields, forests and mountain slopes — a perfect introduction to rural Kyrgyzstan.

Driving: Approx. 170 km / 3–4 hrs
Activity: Easy walking & horseback riding
Horse riding: Approx. 1.5–2 hrs
Accommodation: Family Guest House in Chon-Kemin
Meals: Lunch, Dinner

DAY 2 — CHON-KEMIN → KOK-MOINOK CANYONS → SEMENOV & GRIGORIEV GORGES → KARAKOL | FROM CANYONS TO ISSYK-KUL

Grigorievskoe gorge

After breakfast, we leave Chon-Kemin and continue toward Issyk-Kul.

Our first stop is Kok-Moinok, where we take an easy walk through a landscape of dry clay canyons and unusual eroded formations.

We then continue along the northern shore of Issyk-Kul toward Semenov and Grigoriev Gorges.

These neighboring valleys reveal a completely different side of the region — green mountain slopes, forests, rivers and alpine meadows rising above the lake.

Depending on road and weather conditions, we explore the gorges by 4×4 and make several stops for short walks and photographs.

By evening, we arrive in Karakol, the main town of eastern Issyk-Kul.

Tonight we enjoy dinner with a local Dungan family, where we learn about the traditions and cuisine of one of Karakol's most distinctive cultural communities.

Driving: Approx. 300 km / 5–6 hrs
Activity: Easy walks & scenic 4×4 driving
Accommodation: Hotel in Karakol
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dungan Family Dinner

DAY 3 — KARAKOL → ALTYN-ARASHAN → KARAKOL | 4×4 MOUNTAIN ADVENTURE & HOT SPRINGS

Altyn Arashan thermal springs

After breakfast, we drive to the village of Ak-Suu, where we change to a local 4×4 vehicle specially suited to the rough mountain road ahead.

The journey to Altyn-Arashan is an adventure in itself. The road climbs through a narrow gorge alongside the mountain river, passing forests, rocky slopes and spectacular viewpoints.

Eventually, we reach the Altyn-Arashan Valley at approximately 2,600 m above sea level.

Surrounded by high Tien Shan peaks, alpine meadows and forests, the valley is famous for its natural hot springs.

We have time to explore the valley on foot, enjoy lunch surrounded by the mountains and relax in the thermal pools.

In the afternoon, we descend the same rugged mountain road back to Ak-Suu and return to Karakol.

The evening is free to relax or explore the town.

Altitude: Altyn-Arashan — approx. 2,600 m
Activity: 4×4 mountain driving, easy–moderate walking & hot springs
Accommodation: Hotel in Karakol
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 4 — KARAKOL → JETI-OGUZ → BARSKOON → ARABEL PLATEAU → SKAZKA CANYON → BOKONBAEVO | FROM RED ROCKS TO THE HIGH TIEN SHAN

jety oguz hill 1
jety oguz view point

Today we explore some of the most contrasting landscapes of southern Issyk-Kul.

After breakfast, we leave Karakol and travel to Jeti-Oguz Gorge, famous for its striking red sandstone formations known as the Seven Bulls and the Broken Heart.

After a short walk and photo stop, we continue west along the southern shore of Issyk-Kul toward Barskoon Gorge.

From Barskoon, our 4×4 climbs deep into the Tien Shan. Forests and waterfalls gradually give way to a vast high-altitude landscape as we approach the Arabel Plateau.

At approximately 3,800–3,900 m above sea level, Arabel offers a dramatic world of open mountain terrain surrounded by glaciers and high peaks.

After returning through Barskoon Gorge, we continue to Skazka, or “Fairy Tale” Canyon.

Here we take an easy walk among colorful sandstone formations shaped by wind and erosion, with views toward Issyk-Kul.

By evening, we arrive in Bokonbaevo and check into our family-run guest house.

Highest point: Arabel Plateau — approx. 3,800–3,900 m
Activity: Easy–moderate walks & 4×4 mountain driving
Driving: Full sightseeing day
Accommodation: Family Guest House in Bokonbaevo
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 5 — BOKONBAEVO → SHATYLY PANORAMA → EAGLE HUNTING → AK-SAY CANYONS → BISHKEK | A FINAL DAY ON ISSYK-KUL

Ak Sai Canyons

After breakfast, we begin our final day on the southern shore of Issyk-Kul.

Our first stop is Shatyly Panorama, where a short walk takes us to an elevated viewpoint overlooking the lake. From here, we can appreciate the enormous scale of Issyk-Kul, framed by the surrounding Tien Shan mountains.

We then meet a traditional Kyrgyz eagle hunter, or berkutchi.

During a private demonstration, we learn how golden eagles are trained, how the relationship between hunter and bird develops, and why eagle hunting remains one of the most distinctive traditions associated with Kyrgyz nomadic culture.

Our next stop is the Ak-Say Canyons.

We take an easy walk through a maze of sculpted clay formations toward viewpoints overlooking Issyk-Kul — a final opportunity to experience the dramatic contrast between the dry southern shore and the blue waters of the lake.

After lunch, we begin our journey back to Bishkek, passing through Boom Gorge and the Chuy Valley.

We arrive in the capital in the evening and check into our hotel.

Activity: Easy–moderate walks & cultural experience
Accommodation: Hotel in Bishkek
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
