WHY TRAVELERS CHOOSE THIS TOUR

Experience More Than Issyk-Kul

This is not simply a trip to the lake. The journey connects Ala-Archa, mountain canyons, eagle hunting traditions, Barskoon, Arabel Plateau and the southern shore of Issyk-Kul.

Four Days — Without the Rush

Adding a fourth day gives the journey a much better rhythm. There is time to walk, stop for coffee in the mountains, enjoy a proper lunch and spend time beside Issyk-Kul instead of simply driving from attraction to attraction.

Reach Arabel Without a Multi-Day Expedition

Travel deep into the mountains above Barskoon by 4×4 and experience high-altitude Kyrgyzstan without committing to a long expedition or multi-day trek.

Combine Mountains, Canyons & Water

Ala-Archa, Kok-Moinok, Ak-Say, Arabel, Barskoon, Skazka and Issyk-Kul create a remarkable variety of landscapes within a relatively short journey.

Mix Adventure with Local Culture

The itinerary balances mountain exploration with a traditional eagle hunting experience and time in the communities of Issyk-Kul’s southern shore.

Travel Privately

A private 4×4 format allows more flexibility for photography, short walks and scenic stops — especially important when visiting high-altitude Arabel.

Slow Down at the Right Moments

Coffee overlooking Issyk-Kul, lunch after descending from Arabel, kayaking in the evening and a relaxed final morning beside the lake prevent the tour from feeling like a checklist of attractions.

IS THIS TOUR FOR YOU?

This Tour Is a Great Choice If You:

  • Have four days to explore beyond Bishkek
  • Want to combine Ala-Archa and Issyk-Kul in one journey
  • Want to reach the high-altitude Arabel Plateau
  • Enjoy short hikes and walks without committing to a multi-day trek
  • Like scenic 4×4 journeys and changing landscapes
  • Want to experience Kyrgyz eagle hunting traditions
  • Would enjoy kayaking on Issyk-Kul
  • Appreciate photography and panoramic viewpoints
  • Prefer a private tour with flexibility

  • Want very short driving days
  • Are looking for a challenging trekking expedition
  • Are uncomfortable traveling on mountain and unpaved roads
  • Expect guaranteed access to high-altitude locations regardless of weather

The Right Balance

This journey sits between a classic sightseeing tour and a mountain expedition.

The fourth day also leaves space to actually enjoy Issyk-Kul before returning to Bishkek.

Ala Archa national Park

DAY 1 — BISHKEK → ALA-ARCHA NATIONAL PARK → CHUNKURCHAK → BISHKEK

Begin your journey with a full day in the mountains immediately south of Bishkek.

After leaving the city, drive to Ala-Archa National Park, one of the most accessible mountain areas of the Kyrgyz Ala-Too.

Spend time exploring the park on foot. The walking route can be adapted to the group's interests and fitness level, allowing you to enjoy the alpine scenery, spruce-covered slopes, mountain river and surrounding peaks without committing to a demanding trek.

After the walk, continue toward Chunkurchak Gorge.

Although located relatively close to Ala-Archa, Chunkurchak offers a different mountain landscape, with open viewpoints, steep slopes and wide panoramas across the surrounding ranges.

Take time to explore the area and enjoy the scenery before returning to Bishkek in the evening.

Tonight we stay in Bishkek, ready to begin our journey toward Issyk-Kul the following morning.

Highlights: Ala-Archa National Park • Mountain Walk • Chunkurchak Gorge • Kyrgyz Ala-Too
Accommodation: Hotel in Bishkek
Meals: Lunch

DAY 2 — BISHKEK → KOK-MOINOK CANYONS → AK-SAY CANYONS → BOKONBAEVO → EAGLE HUNTING → ISSYK-KUL

Kok Moinok canyons

After breakfast, leave Bishkek and travel east through Boom Gorge toward Issyk-Kul.

Our first stop is Kok-Moinok Canyons, where we take a short walk through a dry landscape of sculpted clay formations, narrow passages and unusual natural shapes.

Continue toward the western end of Issyk-Kul before following the southern shore to the Ak-Say Canyons.

Explore the canyon on foot and then slow down for one of the special moments of the journey — a coffee break overlooking Issyk-Kul.

It is a chance to relax and enjoy the striking contrast between the dry canyon landscape, the blue waters of the lake and the mountains rising beyond it.

Continue toward Bokonbaevo, where we meet a local berkutchi — a traditional Kyrgyz eagle hunter.

Learn about the relationship between the hunter and the golden eagle, see the bird at close range and discover how this tradition has been preserved and passed from generation to generation.

After the demonstration, continue to our accommodation on the southern shore of Issyk-Kul.

Highlights: Kok-Moinok Canyons • Ak-Say Canyons • Coffee Break overlooking Issyk-Kul • Eagle Hunting • South Shore
Accommodation: Guest House / Yurt Camp on Issyk-Kul
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 3 — ISSYK-KUL → BARSKOON → ARABEL PLATEAU → BARSKOON WATERFALLS → SKAZKA CANYON → KAYAKING

Kok Moinok canyons

Today we leave the lake behind for several hours and travel high into the mountains.

After breakfast, drive toward Barskoon Gorge and begin climbing deeper into the Tien Shan.

As the road gains altitude, forests gradually give way to wide mountain valleys and open high-altitude landscapes.

Continue toward the Arabel Plateau, one of the highest points of our journey.

Here we leave the vehicle for a short walk through the high-mountain landscape. There is no demanding trek today — the idea is to slow down, explore the surroundings and experience the scale and silence of the mountains.

We stop for a coffee break on the Arabel Plateau, surrounded by alpine landscapes.

Afterwards, descend back toward Barskoon, where a hot lunch will be prepared in advance.

After lunch, take a walk through Barskoon Gorge toward its mountain waterfalls, surrounded by Tien Shan spruce forest and steep mountain slopes.

Return to the vehicle and continue along the southern shore toward Skazka Canyon.

Explore the colorful sandstone formations of Skazka on foot before continuing to our accommodation beside Issyk-Kul.

If weather and lake conditions are suitable, finish the day with kayaking on Issyk-Kul.

After a day that began high in the mountains, the evening on the water provides a completely different perspective on the landscape.

Spend the night on the shore of Issyk-Kul.

Highlights: Arabel Plateau • High-Altitude Walk • Mountain Coffee Break • Barskoon Waterfalls • Skazka Canyon • Kayaking
Accommodation: Guest House / Yurt Camp on Issyk-Kul
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

DAY 4 — ISSYK-KUL → SHATYLY PANORAMA → BISHKEK

Shatyly pano

The final morning begins at a slower pace.

After breakfast, spend a few more hours beside Issyk-Kul.

Depending on the season and weather, take a walk along the shore, relax by the lake or simply enjoy a quiet morning before beginning the journey back to Bishkek.

Later, drive toward Shatyly Panorama.

From the road, take a short walk to the panoramic viewpoint above the southern shore. From here, wide views open across Issyk-Kul toward the mountain ranges on the opposite side of the lake.

It is a fitting final viewpoint after four days of traveling through the mountains and landscapes surrounding Issyk-Kul.

After descending from Shatyly, stop for lunch and begin the return journey.

Travel west along the lake, through Boom Gorge and across the Chuy Valley.

Arrive in Bishkek in the evening, completing our four-day journey from the Kyrgyz Ala-Too to the high-altitude landscapes of Arabel and the shores of Issyk-Kul.

Highlights: Relaxed Issyk-Kul Morning • Shatyly Panorama • Scenic Drive • Return to Bishkek
Accommodation: Not Included
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How difficult is this tour?

The tour is rated Moderate.

There are several short walks in Ala-Archa, the canyons, Barskoon, Arabel and Shatyly, but no technical trekking or long mountain hikes are required.

The main physical requirement is being comfortable with active days that combine driving and walking.

Do we need hiking experience?

No.

Previous hiking experience is not required. Walking distances can be adapted to the group, making the tour suitable for travelers with a normal level of fitness.

The road reaches high-altitude terrain above Barskoon, where weather conditions can be significantly colder than at Issyk-Kul.

We keep the walking portion relatively short and allow time to adapt to the altitude.

Is Arabel always accessible?

No. Access depends on snow, weather and road conditions.

The tour normally operates from May to October, but conditions in the high mountains can change quickly. If reaching Arabel is not safe, the itinerary will be adjusted.

Safety comes first, so the activity may be changed or cancelled if conditions on Issyk-Kul are unsuitable.

What is the accommodation like?

Is this a private tour?

Yes.

The standard format is a private tour, giving us more flexibility with stops, photography, walking time and the pace of the journey.

Are there long driving days?

There is a reasonable amount of driving because the tour connects Bishkek, Ala-Archa, Issyk-Kul and the high mountains of Arabel within four days.

However, the itinerary has been designed with regular walks, scenic stops, coffee breaks and activities so that the journey does not feel like continuous driving.

Can the itinerary change?

Yes.

Mountain weather, road conditions and the condition of Issyk-Kul can affect access to Arabel and kayaking.

The guide may adjust the timing or route when necessary for safety and to provide the best possible experience.
