Explore the Arabel Plateau, a unique high-altitude valley in Kyrgyzstan. Discover how to get there, what to see at 4,000 meters, and why it is called the “Land of Clouds.”

Arabel Plateau: A Journey to the “Heavenly” Tundra of Kyrgyzstan

The Arabel Plateau is one of the most mysterious and breathtaking places in the Tian Shan mountain range. Located at an altitude of nearly 4,000 meters (approx. 13,100 feet) above sea level, it features a unique landscape reminiscent of an arctic tundra lost among snow-capped peaks. If you are looking for a place where nature has preserved its pristine ruggedness and raw power, the Arabel Valley will be a true discovery.

Where is the Arabel Plateau?

The plateau is located in the southern part of the Issyk-Kul region of Kyrgyzstan, in close proximity to the famous Barskoon Gorge and the Kumtor gold mine. Geographically, it is a high-altitude “syrt” (upland) zone formed thousands of years ago by ancient glaciers that smoothed the terrain and left behind numerous basins and depressions.

Climate and Nature

Arabel is often called the place “where the clouds touch the ground.” An altitude of 3,800–4,000 meters dictates its own rules:

  • Harsh Climate: Even in the middle of summer, temperatures rarely rise above +8°C (46°F).
  • Flora: Vegetation is extremely sparse; only hardy mosses, lichens, and alpine grasses can survive here.
  • Water Wonders: Thanks to glacial melt, the plateau boasts over 50 lakes, as well as numerous rivers and wetlands, creating incredible mirror reflections of the mountains in crystal-clear water.

What to See at the Arabel Plateau

Travelers do not come here for a beach holiday, but for the aesthetics of “white silence” and unique panoramas.

  1. The Lakes: Each of the 50+ lakes has its own character. Surrounded by rocky shores and snow-capped peaks, they offer landscapes you will not find anywhere else in the world.
  2. Edelweiss: Near the water bodies, you can find rare alpine flowers, including the legendary edelweiss.
  3. Observation Points: The road to the plateau passes through scenic switchbacks, offering panoramic views of the Terskey Alatau mountain range.

How to Get to the Arabel Plateau

rip to the plateau requires preparation. The main route passes through the Barskoon Gorge.

  • Transport: Due to the extreme altitude and rocky terrain, it is highly recommended to use 4×4 off-road vehicles.
  • Accessibility: The road is maintained due to its proximity to the Kumtor mine, making it accessible even in challenging conditions. However, independent travel without experience in mountain driving is not recommended.
  • Expert Tip: Plan this as a day trip starting from Karakol or the village of Bokonbayevo. Always pack warm clothing (jackets, hats), as weather conditions at 4,000 meters can change in an instant.

Practical Tips for Travelers

  • Acclimatization: An altitude of 4,000 meters can cause altitude sickness. Spend at least a few days at the level of Lake Issyk-Kul (1,600m) before ascending.
  • Gear: The sun is very intense at this altitude; do not forget high-SPF sunscreen and quality sunglasses.
  • Sustainability: Arabel is a fragile ecosystem. Please do not leave any trash behind and stick to established paths to preserve this unique area for future generations.

The Arabel Plateau is more than just a dot on the map—it is an opportunity to see the mountains from a new, extraordinary perspective. Are you ready to travel through the clouds?
